Public Safety Notice, Telephone Scam Impersonating Toronto Police Officers, City of Toronto

The Toronto Police Service is alerting the public to a growing number of fraudulent phone calls and emails across the City of Toronto involving individuals impersonating Toronto Police officers. These calls are being used to unlawfully solicit personal and financial information.

In these incidents, it is reported that:

  • a suspect contacts the victim by phone, claiming to be a member of the Toronto Police Service and provides an investigator’s name and badge number
  • the caller ID appears as a legitimate Toronto Police Service phone number – but the call does not originate from the Toronto Police Service
  • the suspect claims the victim is under investigation and asks for personal and financial information
  • The Toronto Police Service is reminding the public that Toronto Police officers will never request personal banking information over the phone or by email and will not ask for you to provide your credit and debit cards. Any such request should be treated as a scam.

We are urging all residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to police.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-4200, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), or at www.222tips.com.
